Acupuncture for kids is gaining popularity in Saskatchewan and beyond because it offers a safe and effective natural approach to pediatric care for many common children’s conditions.

Modern acupuncture treatments are done using painless acupuncture and non-needle treatment techniques. So even for the most needle-phobic of children, their acupuncture experience will be easy and virtually painless.

Unlike in western medicine, we believe that each child is completely unique – and so should be their treatment. Acupuncture provides a wellness treatment that is completely custom to the needs of the child. Plus, sometimes western medicine cannot adequately address the health challenges faced by the child – so acupuncture fills the gaps.

Another plus for acupuncture for children is that there is no need to worry about the unwanted side effects of common drugs and painkillers, which typically come with a number of side effects that are especially hard on kids.

The symptoms treated by acupuncture include: digestive problems (constipation, diarrhoea, tummy aches and pains, colic, wind, very smelly poos and wind, fussy eater), immune weakness (constant colds, flus, chronic coughs, recurrent ear infections, recurrent upper respiratory infections, UTIs, asthma), Skin conditions (eczema, school sores, rashes), sleeping problems, ADHD, troublesome teething, myopia related symptoms and more.

Acupuncture is great for children because it’s typically customized to fit each child’s needs and temperament. All aspects of the child’s health are taken into consideration such as diet, digestion, sleep, energy, and immune function!

Will acupuncture hurt my child?

Acupuncture is virtually painless for children. The acupuncturists at Infinite Potential Centre are specially trained to use techniques that are safe and comfortable for children with needles so fine they are like a strand of hair. There are also options for rapid needle treatments so the session is quicker than it would be for an adult. And as always, our acupuncturists work to ensure that your child is comfortable, anxiety-free and happy during the session.

Does acupuncture really work for children?

While the evidence is limited, there are numerous studies that show that acupuncture is an effective treatment for children’s health issues including chronic pain.

The latest study on this subject was conducted at the Harvard-affiliated Children’s Hospital in Boston by Yuan-Chi Lin, MD, an anesthesiologist who specializes in pain management in children. Dr. Lin’s study included 243 youngsters ranging in age from six months to 18 years who were being treated for headaches, stomach aches, back pain and other chronic complaints that often caused them to miss school. When the study began, the young patients rated their pain as an “8” on a scale of 1 to 10.
